Google Search is changing quickly. Instead of always showing a list of ten blue links, Google can now use AI Overviews and AI Mode to give users a more detailed answer directly in Search.
For a small business owner, this naturally raises a question: If Google can answer the customer, what happens to my website?
The good news is that you don’t need to throw away your existing SEO strategy. Google says its generative AI search features are built on its existing Search systems, so strong SEO fundamentals still matter.
What Are AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews provide an AI-generated summary at the top of some Google searches, with links to supporting websites.
AI Mode goes further. It allows people to have a more conversational search experience and explore a topic through follow-up questions.
For example, someone might search:
“Best SEO consultant for a small business in Ahmedabad”
Instead of simply looking through traditional results, the user may see an AI-generated response that brings together information from several sources.
That makes Google AI Overviews SEO increasingly relevant for businesses that depend on organic search.
Does Normal SEO Still Matter?
Yes.
This is probably the most important point for small businesses.
Google’s current guidance says that the same SEO best practices remain important for appearing in its generative AI features. There isn’t a separate technical trick that guarantees inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
That means you should still pay attention to things such as:
- Making important pages crawlable and indexable
- Writing useful, original content
- Building a logical internal linking structure
- Maintaining good technical SEO
- Providing accurate business information
- Creating content that genuinely answers customer questions
So, AI search optimization is not about abandoning SEO. It is more about making your existing SEO work harder.
Focus on Being Useful, Not Just Optimized
This is where many businesses can go wrong.
Don’t create ten short articles simply because you found ten keywords related to your service. A page that actually explains a problem, answers common questions and provides useful information is usually more valuable.
For a local business, this could include detailed service pages, location-specific information, useful FAQs, customer reviews and clear information about what the business actually offers.
Google’s guidance also emphasizes providing unique, non-commodity content rather than simply producing more of the same material available elsewhere.
What About AI-Generated Content?
Using AI to help with research, outlines or editing isn’t the main issue. The bigger question is whether the final content provides genuine value.
If your website contains hundreds of generic AI-written pages that say essentially the same thing, adding more pages probably isn’t the answer.
Instead, improve the pages that matter to your customers.
Keep an Eye on Search Console
Google has also started rolling out new Search Console generative AI performance reports. These reports can show how often URLs from a website appear in generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, along with information about pages, countries, devices and dates. The reports are currently being rolled out to a subset of websites.
This is an important development because businesses can gradually move beyond asking only, “What is my Google ranking?” and start looking at broader search visibility.
What Should a Small Business Do Now?
Don’t chase every new AI SEO trend you see online.
Start with the basics:
Check your technical SEO. Improve important service pages. Create genuinely useful content. Strengthen internal links. Keep your local business information accurate. And regularly review your performance in Google Search Console.
If you’re unsure how well your website is prepared for AI-driven search, an SEO audit can help identify technical, content and visibility gaps before you start making unnecessary changes.
AI is changing how people search, but it hasn’t made good websites irrelevant. If anything, it makes having a useful, trustworthy and technically sound website more important.
